Republic Airlines
Republic Airlines is a regional airline in the United States. The original Republic Airlines was established in 1979 through the merger of North Central Airlines and Southern Airways. It was a major U.S. airline headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota. In 1986, Republic Airlines merged with Northwest Airlines, forming Northwest Airlines as the surviving entity. This merger resulted in the disappearance of the Republic Airlines brand.
However, a new Republic Airlines was founded in 1998 as a regional carrier for Northwest Airlines. It operated flights under the name Northwest Airlink, using a fleet of regional aircraft. After the merger of Northwest Airlines and Delta Air Lines in 2008, the regional carrier changed its name to Republic Airlines, operating flights as Delta Connection.
Republic Airlines became part of Republic Airways Holdings, which also included Chautauqua Airlines and Shuttle America. These airlines operated flights as regional carriers for major U.S. airlines, including Delta Air Lines, American Airlines, and United Airlines.
The regional carrier operated a fleet of Embraer regional jets and served various destinations within the United States and neighboring countries. As a regional airline, Republic Airlines primarily provided short-haul flights, connecting smaller airports to larger hubs.
